Dear Caudata Peers;

Today, something a bit different ... call it Caudata Culture ... Sports Culture if you will.
I won't post the entire item since it's 'caudata content' is so modest, however, if you go to the link below, and then do a word search for 'newt' ... methinks perchance you'll find the next item that we need - now that Dawn (Otterwoman) has cornered the market on 'snot otter' buttons.

Hmmmm ... Newt-related News and sports have now been covered; our groups' global warming concerns cover the weather .... if I can get a newt-related 'theatre/art/social events about town' and newt-related gossip columns going, we'll have everything we need to do a small-town newspaper!

Cheers and respects all;

Wes

Got it! The theatre column submission: http://blogs.citypages.com/ctg/2007/11/war_with_the_ne.php

OK ... where's my newt-related gossip column? ... and please, it's way too easy to propose something with Mr Gingrich ... and it should be from a newspaper ... or a blog site 'sponsored' by a newspaper. Think outside the vivarium please!

Cheers

Wes

The words "Oh man" spring to mind :p. And by the way Wes, we don't pay you enough.

Well...what comes to my mind when I search this article for "newts" is: What about a song or hymn for Caudata? Anyone able to compose a song? :D

Bryn Mawr is the name of my grandmothers house in Conwy , close to the lovely castle..

aaaa,, I've already written quite alot of lyrics involving caudata and amphibia.

I have one song called "quagshire", which is nearly finished..

this is a segment of some yet unrecorded words:

"...trippin when I'm pond dippin swamp swimmin, flippin,
scratching my scalp, at catching newts drom the alps,
full colour crested, they'll do a sorta dorsal dance,
braught to the land on garden centre water plants,
basicly, its all about attracting a girl,
I keep a 30 gallon tank, and make it the world..."

I also just purchaced a 1970's pressing of "British Mammals and Amphibians"
Should have some interesting words..

I have a tshirt that says "Salute the Newt" from a winery called "Red newt Winery."
I think "Angry young Newt" would make a great name for a vintage...

I wrote a poem about newts that could be set to music if someone were inclined...

Also, someone, maybe someone form here... outbid me by 20p at the last minute on ebay for a book about British amphibians published in 1912, I wanted it so badly, I think it may also have contained useful info on our native species early in the century, oh well, I was so upset, but im ok now..

Gee, Sam, since you asked so nicely...

Newts

I think that I would well dispute
A poem cuter than a newt,

A newt with little orange spots,
A canvas for connect-the-dots.

Bright orange in her newtly grace,
So delicate and fair of face,

Or in her garb of olive-green,
There is no lovelier to be seen.

Your tree-trunk legs and spindly arms,
You pull my heart-strings with your charms.

Your dewlap pulsing in the night,
As I watch you from my human height;

Your tiny bulbous eyeball slits,
Reduce me down to itty-bits.

Your glistening and shiny skin,
Your purity and lack of sin;

I may recite, and play the lute,
But only God can make a newt.

(with apologies to Joyce Kilmer, who,
did you all know, was a GUY?)

Nice poem otterwoman (you sound like a superhero lol), have you read Alphabeasts by Dick King Smith and Quintin Blake?
I think you would like it, it's a collection of poems about animals with lovely illustrations aswell,
Its done alphabetically and has a conservation message in there too.
Here's one of my favourites:

G

The Gecko has adhesive toes,
Straight up the wall the gecko goes.
And then-and this is most appealing-
The Gecko walks across the ceiling!

Foolhardy is the one who tries
This topsy-turvy exercise.
To sudden death you will be fated-
The Gecko can't be imitated.

A Limerick of 2 minutes' work:

"There is a newt known as Taricha,
It’s handsome in colour and feature,
It grows large in size,
It likes worms and flies,
And if it were big enough it’d eat ya!"

My speciality is the haiku though:

"Chopped night crawlers;
Salamander caviar.
They can’t get enough."

Both Copyright (c) John P. Clare (haha)

I'm a haiku machine btw. I'll put up some tomorrow.

Hey, Sam, Superhero, eh? Thanks.
In the next 1/2 hour I'm going to order that book from amazon. It sounds great. I wonder if "O"
is for "otter"??

And John, I am very much looking forward to your Haikus. Finally, the literary side of newts.
Maybe my PhD in Comparative Literature will finally do me some good.

But I have been thinking of suggesting for a while, that maybe we could have a sub-forum of humor (poems count) and sort of "off-topic" newt stuff (like this, and maybe newt art too). And maybe LOL newts, if it won't make magustrate regurgitate...(hey, there's a poem in there, too)!

As for the above-mentioned theater column, has anyone here ever read "War with the Newts"? I did, and it was a really good book, funny, but you have to understand something about European history and WWI to appreciate the humor of it.

I can name two or three people who will roll their eyes as soon as they see that suggested. I can see putting an offtopic subgroup in to the general discussion area for the likes of this though. Any major objections from anyone? Or should I post a poll?

Well, that way people like me can be sequestered where we won't offend the masses.

There once was a newt called Tim
Who loved to drink his jin
He would get drunk fast
Coz he would order a glass
And promptly jump right in

my creation

Good one Sam.

Here is mine:

Roses are red
Violets are blue
I love caudates
But boy, do I hate cleaning out their poo

HAHA isnt it great!? So original, I think I'm a born poet.

This one goes especially well with your motivational poster.

I think I can survive the LOLnewts now :p This was just the last place I expected the fad to come. I think there is a space as a subforum for odder things like the caudata pajamas and rubber replicas that are sometimes posted. I don't know how well trafficked it would be though.

But that reminds me... John, would you mind changing my screen name from magustrate to Abrahm? This thread and Dawn thinking of becoming Snotterwoman reminded me.

please note

Kids/begginers, Limeriks Are Make Believe Like Santa Claus And Dinosoars.
Do Not Put Newts Into Jin Or Any Alchoholik Substance.
Never Put Newts Into Milk, The Constant White Will Drive Them To Insanity.
Newts Do Not Have Names Like Tim And If They Do Have Names Humans Can Not Prenounce Them.
