I was woefully unprepared for daytime herping, but I lucked out anyway:

And you wonder why they're so fragmented:

Anyone know the biologists who study them on Kyushu?

Superb, thank you for sharing, Shane. Got any more photos? :)

Re: Andrias

Thanks for the replies!

Ralf, I googled the topic with about a billion different search queries, but couldn't find anything in English specifically regarding Andrias on Kyushu. I found several different range maps dealing with Kyushu (including the caudata.org map), but none seem to be conclusive when it comes to extant populations. I have limited access to scientific journals, but of those that I was able to peruse, all topics dealt with Honshu populations.

In past years, I have emailed Japanese biologists (none from Kyushu), but the emails went unanswered. I also emailed an American biologist who lives in Japan, and received a very disrespectful reply, that was full of misinformation to boot, but that is neither here or now I suppose. I have a feeling that the lack of replies from the Japanese biologists were simply tight-lips, which is understandable.

In any case, I found that mini-giant on Kyushu. Depending on the source, they are only known to be extant at one location, and the next source will say they are rare, but still have a broad range on the island. I don't care about knowing specific localities, just trying to find some truth in the morass:confused: I guess I'll just have to keep digging.

John, those were the only decent photos.........most of the time was spent sitting on a rock, and just enjoying the moment.
