Hi, I've just found a really nice garden ornament which I intend to use in one of my tanks. The ornament is made from "a frost-proof composite which is reconstituted stone" apparently.
I'm planning to seal it so that I can use it safely in my future axolotl tank. (It's brand-new, by the way)
Naturally, I've done a search on the best stuff with which to seal it, but by way of double-checking, I'd appreciate any feedback concerning it's suitability.
As far as I can gather, a water and polyurethane-based sealant with low VOC content is the thing to go for.
I've a tin of satin Floor varnish, which ticks the water/urethane box and the low VOC box also.
I plan to eventually silicone the ornament in place, (once it has fully cured, then sat in a bucket of water for a while, first)

So, just to double-check, is there anything more I should consider before I get started with it?

Thanks, as always, KW ;)

What Varnish is it? I've been looking for a varnish to seal a polystyrene tank background. But I've read that they break down in water and leach chemicals...

Bare in mind this is from an hour or two's research online.

I'd be interested to see if there are any suggestions or if this varnish will work?

Bumping!

I would also like to know more about safe epoxy/urethane sealants and tapecrete-y type things, brands, alternatives and UKer's experiences. It would help no end for future projects in the pipeline.

Cheers
Cliff

I spoke with a company in the uk who have a solvent free epoxy floor sealant that adheres really well. Havent used it but will dig out the company name. £25 ish for a litre I think they said.

I have also been looking at this for an alternative for a sealant, its silicone based and low V.O.C.
Geocel Ecochem Silicone Water Seal 5L, 5033383017551

Anyone tried it? ...or any input would be greatly received really!

I wouldnt personally mate, I almost used B&Q Mastic instead of Aquarium Grade Mastic when i was younger until people told me not to lol But it depends what you want to use it for, you could try V8 Pond sealant as thats fine with outdoor ponds and works really well, just expensive! lol
