I need some help here. I got these from the bait freezer, I have used them before as bait but they are labelled blood worms? Is this what everyone else has been talking about that they feed their axies with? It smells like it may have been preserved in alcohol - kindof sweet but spirity. What do you reckon - safe or not to feed to axies.

Warning: These two pics are kind of gross, and I have a really strong stomach when it comes to gross things. Please don't be eating when you look at these - especially not anchovies

The length of the worm is about 10 cm.

i dont believe these are bloodworm. if you look at images of bloodworm on google you will see what tghey look like. they only grow 1cm longor something like that. you get them in packets like you get daphnia in.

Anne, don't feed those to your Axolotl! here is a link explaining why http://www.mainebait.com/bloodworm.html
They have poison glands that can even land a painful bite on a human. they may hurt your Axolotls! I hope I told you in time, and i hope the information I gave you helped

Please post to let us know you're progess, I am concerned for your Axolotls.

http://www.thatpetplace.com/images/p6402b.jpg These are the frozen bloodworms that I use. They come frozen about 100 to a cube, about the size of an ice cube. They're at most 3 cm long. They are definately NOT what you have there. And from a quick Google search, those are indeed dangerous to axolotls.

Joan, I really hope they don't kill her Axolotls! I am so worried for her babies right now. I can't stand to think the little axies would get hurt... It even bothers me to chops up my Axolotls earthworms. i hope she catches my post in time.

Don't stress Rheann! I post before I feed

. I thought they looked dodgy so I'll leave em until I find some Tailor running

You like anchovies, yeah?

Oh I am so glad that you didn't Anne

now I feel better. Those worms would really pack a sting going down you're Axolotls throat. Ouch! Hard for me to even think about it... yucky. Nathan, they smell that way because they are soaked in salt water or something... I don't remember what the link said. they're just plain scary to me.

i love anchovies actually and those worms look just as good yum yum mm mm mm

hey i just picked up another thing you say
you have a strong stomach that means you must
be able to eat them. and a question apart
from being sweet what else did they taste like

Blood worms can't even get that big. Bloodworms are just red misquito larvae. But if you get the real bloodworms your axie will love em!! Mine won't eat the frozen ones but he loves the live ones.

I hope no one else will accidently pick up the worms Anne has pictured for their Axies. Hey Anne, maybe you should ask the Administrater if you could have them put those pictures in the axie food section and talk about them with links so people won't accidently feed them. They really look a lot like regular earthworms...except all morbid and spikey.

Grant, where do you find live blood worms in the US? I've been under the impression that live bloodworms are pretty hard to find in the US. Are you sure you're not feeding live blackworms (which are actually red, and not black)? If you're unsure, look at them under a magnifying glass. Blackworms are OBVIOUSLY segmented (like an earthworm), while bloodworms are not segmented. Then... Tubifex are segmented too, so if they're segmented, they're definately not bloodworms!

The pet stores here in town think black worms are called blood worms... wish they would get the facts right. I looked up a picture of a blood worm, and compared it to a black worm, and black worms are deffenetly what they are selling! This has happened every pet store I have gone to. I hope this helps

Hey Joan nope I'm positive they're bloodworms. What part of the US do you live? I live in California and just about every pet store sells live bloodworms. But I am positive they are bloodworms and where I live they are very common.

I live in Sacramento. I have only been to 4 pet stores since I have been here. All of them are selling black worms as blood worms. Probibly lack of knowladge. I would like to actually get some real live blood worms, I think my Axolotls would love them

I'm thinking of changing Mr. Nibbles name to Oinker because he's such an aggressive eater! lol

Grant, I'd like to see pictures of your live bloodworms. They'd be interesting to see.

I don't have any right now but next time I pick some up I will take some pictures. But I'm sure that they are bloodworms and they look identical to the picture. They aren't blackworms or tubifex, they are bright red and are segmented (I think you were mistaken Joan because bloodworms have obvious segments).
