HI everyone i have been reading that people keep many diffrent types of salamanders. just wondering where in australia do people get them from cause ive only seen axolatls sold in pet shops. And does anyone know the scientific name for the normal axolotels they sell in the pet shops and what salamander they would be if they morphed.
:D

thankyou

You won't see any other type of salamander there. Axolotls are the only salamander that is legal to keep in Australia.

Ambystoma mexicanum is their scientific name.

ok no worries. You wouldnt happen to know why there is only one type of salamander allowed in australia

Because Australia has a terrible record of invasive species breaking havoc among native wildlife, and as such it has adopted a policy of no imports which exists to try to protect what´s left of the unique and fascinating australian fauna. By not allowing the animals to get into the country, they are eliminating the possibility of accidental or negligent scapes or introductions.

Sucks for you as a hobbyist, but it´s brilliant news for the native fauna.

I also think i should mention that some axolotls are not exactly Ambystoma mexicanum, but rather an hybrid between A.mexicanum and A.tigrinum/mavortium.

Yeh I've only ever seen axi's... but they make fantastic pets!!! Closest thing you can get to really 'exotic' without getting a license (like you need to turtles and the like)

Hmmm it's interesting I thought the axies were the only salamander creature allowed in oz. I was at LFS last week looking for a tank siphon and the guy was saying that he was getting in some salamanders next week. I didn't think much of it cause I wanted to get out of there. The guy was trying to sell me a cheapo siphon for $30, like the ones they sell at the cheapo stores. I found the same siphon on ebay later for like $5.00 free shipping.

Hopefully your right Sarah. It was odd though because I said I need the siphon for my axolotl tank and after he showed me what I had I browsed the store a little more. He then approached me saying that salamanders were coming in next week :S

Maybe it´s morphed axies that he is talking about....it´d be a pitty though, poor little things....:S

Axolotls are salamanders. So saying 'salamanders' and meaning specifically axolotls is correct.
