here are pics of my axies that have been hatching over the past week.there are pictures showing the two different colours i have.some have clear/really light pink gills which i think are leucistic.other are darker in colour and their gills are darker but they seem to look yellow with black markings.could anyone tell me the definate colours of them and whether the yellow with black markings one is a weird colour or whether it is the young colour of a wild type.

the first pic is of what i think a leucistic top and wild type bottom.second pic is of 2 leucistics.third pic is a front view of a wildtype.forth is of leucistic and wild type but showing a smaller and larger one in the batch.and the final pic is of the wild type. i love the colouration of this one and hope it is a weird and rare colour! *crosses fingers*

cool pics good luck with them.

I cant wait till i can start breeding mine.

Its cool watching axies develop from the just hatched stage to full grown adult... Although still same basic form they look totally different

thanks everyone.im keeping a leucistic and one of the wildtypes (the yellow and black markings) if it is a weird colour when it gets older. got names for them already.lol.boj and hinchcliff (dont laugh) and ive finally found a place that will buy the rest (not sure if they will buy all them though) if they look healthy and well. the shop is great and specialises in reptiles, amphibians and salamanders and all animals are properly cared for and are really healthy and they go to homes with the proper information and a care sheet.so i know they will go to good homes.

Your babys are looking really good Claire. Good luck with the axies you decide to keep.

thank you jarred!
doe anyone know what colours they will be by these pictures and at this age?

thank you in advance

They look like wild types to me but I am no expert on such matters.

lol.thanks any way. they will probably be easier to distinguish colour when they get older.but ill keep posting pics as they get older and develop more.

lol.i like them when they are like miniture axies.they have all their legs but are only like 3 inches long!lol!

Hi,Claire,
I've the same situation with some babies hatched Feb 6th. I lack consistent genetic informations about the 2 wildtypes parents, but I obtained about 1/4 pales larvae (like yours), and 3/4 dark ones (like on your pics).
They are now 1 month old, and the difference between the 2 types has increased. The dark ones look yellow with black spots everywhere. The pales ones have only little black spots on their head and back, nothing on the tail and the gills ; I hope they really are leucistic, but I'll have to wait...

cool.im hoping my paler ones are leucistic too!but i think i know for sure the darker ones will be wildtype.ill keep you posted on any info.ill also post a pic of one of the pale ones that im keeping.

Hi, Claire,
I'll try to get pics of mine too, since the pale ones seem to confirm to be leucistic. Now they begin to eat bloodworms, and the pale larvae appear with dark red bellies.
Anyway, in your case, with leucistic and wildtype parents, if you have around 50% pale larvae, I think you have a good probability to have some leucistic ones.

well i have pics of the leucistic implanning to keep but im at college at the moment so ill post them when i have some time at home. they are definately leucistic and wildtype.lots have died now.i have less than 100 left. but my female decided to have more eggs. i was wondering why she was so fat. i think she was just waiting for the male to get in the mood and lay some spermatophores!lol.ive had to cull half the eggs and ive kept the eggs that were stuck to the plant.
the leucistic im keeping (named boj) had small front legs which are sooo cute!he is way bigger than all the others.ive also separated a wildtype into a single tub and called him hinchcliff.wow im great with names!
cant wait till they have all legs.so cute.sorry im just slightly excited and hyper.lol.
ive also decided im going to leave my camera with my boyfriend so he can take pictures everyday of the eggs to show the development of them.

speak again soon.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
