So I had a bit of a scare tonight and I have no idea what to do.
My female axolotl Kenway who's at least 3 years old now started bleeding out her gill slit for no apparent reason today (Thursday the 30th) around 8pm EST. I had some black tea in her tank since Wednesday morning around 10am. Other than that her water parameters were within normal ranges. The water was also fresh as I had just changed it yesterday morning when I added some black tea, as she has a strange mark on her belly. I can attempt to take pictures, but it doesn't look like a burn or a scratch, or anything that's really more than skin deep. It doesn't look like fungal growth either. It looks like just a slightly raised patch of skin that isn't discolored.
I went to feed her today and she readily took food, a piece of frozen cod that I thawed out. I have been feeding my axolotls frozen cod on occasion as my youngest axolotl won't eat pellets and I am currently unable to obtain earthworms. She happily ate the food and then blood started freely flowing from her gill slit. The best I could tell was that it wasn't coming from her leg, or her gills directly, but her gill slit, so I'm not sure if it was coming from flesh on the slit specifically or from somewhere inside her. She didn't seem phased by it though. She ate the piece of fish. Eventually the bleeding stop, but not after she lost maybe 1 or 2ml. She's been in a bucket separate from her tank since then, and I did a full water change in her tank. Once the bleeding stopped she was looking for food still, and I fed her a second small piece of fish, which she also readily ate and no bleeding followed.
If anyone has any advice on what I should do about this please share. I live in Ohio, and if anyone knows of good vets in or around Cleveland or within maybe a 30-45min driving range of Cleveland please let me know too. I'm not sure if this was.... some strange one off, a reaction to tea (which she's had tea baths before and this never happened), ora sign of something far worse. I'm hoping for the best but... scared for the worst.
