It appears as though he has skinned his leg, I have attached pictures. I've read that they have amazing regeneration capabilities but I would like some guidance please.
Will the skin grow back? What can I do to stop infection? Will he survive?

Is he by himself? People on this site have had success using Indian almond leaves in the tank to prevent infection and promote healing. You should try to see where or how he injured himself

First of all, your axolotl is beautiful! I would just closely watch the injury for signs of infection or fungus. Keep the water clean and fresh. Let us know if any problems arise.

Hi, he is with two other axolotls. I don't know if they were the cause of the wound or not. I'd imagine if they tried to take a chunk off him then his whole leg would be gone not just the skin. I don't have any sharp ornaments anything so I'm stumped as to the cause.
I will leave him be for now and if there's an infection or something then I'll be back here ASAP.

What size are your axolotls and the tank? If they're roughly the same size, they have enough space in the tank and they're fed enough, any fighting should be kept to a minimum. Do you have any substrate or rocks? I've seen my axolotl speed through the tank, perhaps he could have scraped himself on the sand or a rock or something. Everyone else gave great advice, I don't think there should be much to worry about.

yeah then that def looks like a bite wound where he was able to get away before they took off the whole leg. Is there enough hiding places for them all? and how much are you feeding them?

My axolotls are 5-7 inches, 3 of them. I've never seen fighting, I assume at some point they had quarrels though.
They each get a medium ( 4-5 cm ) worm every day or two.

5-7 inches sounds like they are still juvies? forgive me if I'm wrong but if you have more issues with fighting I think I would just try to make sure everyone gets fed every day (or maybe a slightly larger worm if you know you're gonna skip a day) otherwise it's probably just a one time thing and he'll probably heal fine on his own (watch for fungus though!)

good luck! and omg please post more pictures in the gallery section that axie is absolutely gorgeous.

Biting is very common and I wouldn't consider it 'fighting'

Axolotls are very impulsive eaters, movement can sometimes cause them to instinctively 'SNAP' at the 'food' be it a worm, pellet, tank buddy or finger, as you will no doubt discover at some point!

Some axolotls are snappier than others (I have one that has a 3ft tank all to himself because he's very bitey) but no experience of mine would ever suggest it is hunger or viciousness, just instinct. It happens.

Indian Almond/Catappa leaves are wonderful and I highly recommend them. They last a few weeks and eventually break up and make a profound mess, but they will soothe a wound and will create a slightly antibacterial effect.

As always, keep the tank cool and the water clean, but it sounds like your beautiful axolotl is doing his thing and healing nicely.

The dead skin has begun to fall off and he's even using the injured leg! I think he will be ok.

One of my other axolotls, the leucistic, is having difficulty staying down. He just floats! I've read that this is occasionally due to axolotls needing to defecate, how long will this take?
