I have a year old axolotl and he is very sick. I had him in a 10 gallon with fine sand before, and everyday after I fed him (earthworms, soft axolotl pellets, red wrigglers) he would float as if he was constipated so I would wait a few days till he pooped and then feed him again. However, this most recent time, he never pooped and after 4 days, I fridged him. He has been in the fridge for another four days and still no poop. Except this morning I noticed he is floating upside down and sonetimes on his side. He is swimming and his gills are back. What is going on? Some people said impaction( maybe he did poop and I just didnt notice), some said they float due to under feeding(possible because I stopped feeding when I thought he was inpacted, and others say it is a swim bladder infection!!! Please help me

Did a bit of searching and found that 1. Could be attributed to impaction or 2. Stress is leading to a buildup of bacteria which give off gas causing it to float. Try eliminating the source of the impaction or stress.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
