Axolotl has a tail injury!

Hello everyone,

Unfortunately my Axolotl has a bit or a tear on his tail. I have no idea how it's happened, but there is also a small bloody looking 'stalk' sticking out of the end which could possibly be his spine :errr: the tear is rather large, I feel like he may have caught it on something.
I checked his tank, there's nothing sharp in there! So I am baffled!

I gave him a tea bath, I changed his tank water, and I've hit the fans on to keep him cooler.

I want to give him a salt bath, but it's not bleeding so I am unsure it's worth it?

I'm sorry about your little guy! Honestly though the description of the injury sounded worse than what the picture looks to be in my opinion..
One of my Axies got a scratch on his face about a month ago from a sharp tank ornament and it was so close to his eye I was worried of infection, but I just kept my tank parameters in really good conditions and in less than a week it had started to completely heal without any treatments or salt baths or anything!
The healing capabilities of Axies are unreal.
I'm not sure a salt bath is a good idea, I've seen some people however recommend keeping the tank very clean, the parameters at good levels and adding an Indian almond leaf to the water!

Your poor little fella.

I agree with Samantha. Rather than using a salt bath, which would be more suitable if there was fungus, just keeping your tank parameters perfect should give your little one a good environment in which to heal. Axolotls are so awesome at healing, and as long as the tail doesn't become infected, he should start to heal in no time. :happy:

Same as Samantha, I'm not very experienced as I have only been keeping axolotls for 4 months, so getting advice from a more experienced keeper would be a good idea.
