Three photos. 2 are of now, one of when i got him 5 weeks ago from a rescue center. The 5 weeks ago pic he is nice and pink, now he seems a total different shade. He has hardly ate since I got him. Initially I thought it was him getting used to the new environment so didnt worry. After 10 days he finally ate some pellets. But since Day 10 has has refused all food, he seems scared of worms, refuses pellets, doesnt go near bloodworms. He has 2 other tank mates, but I have tubbed him for the last two days with 24 hour water changes and prime drops (20 liter tub, 10 prime drops). The water in the tank is ok, constantly checked for temp and water tested daily.

has he been in water containing methylene blue? how are your other axolotls (if they are dark types a skin discolouration might not be noticable)?
seems more like a skin dye rather than pigmentation change, check any ornaments fake plants etc.. for dye/paint leaching into water.
has there been any exposure to copper (this includes worms or pellet ingredients, even old oxidised piped can leach into water).
do you know what food he ate prior to having him as he might not be used to having other food types.

Hi wolfen,

Thank you for the reply and those suggestions. To answer your questions:

  • Tank Mates: I actually have another leucistic (pink) axolotl and a melanoid (black) in the same tank. The other pink one shows no signs of this green/yellow tint and appears perfectly healthy. This makes me think it might not be a dye leaching from ornaments, as I’d expect both light-colored ones to be affected.
  • Water/Pipes: The house was built in 1960, so copper pipes are definitely a factor. However, we run all tap water through a Pozzani filter before it goes into the tank, and I do 50% weekly water changes.
  • Methylene Blue/Copper: I’m not sure if the rescue center used Methylene Blue, but he is currently tubbed with Seachem Prime to help detoxify any potential heavy metals or irritants.
  • Diet: The rescue center mentioned he was raised on dendrobaena worms. I have tried offering those many times, along with pellets and bloodworms, but he has shown zero interest for 5 weeks now.
He is currently tubbed at 17°C with daily 100% water changes. He remains extremely "flighty" and scared of any movement. If the other leucistic is fine but this one is turning yellow/green and refusing food, could it be a specific sensitivity or internal organ issue (like kidneys) triggered by the move?

Any further thoughts on how to get him to strike at food when he's this jumpy?
