Im so sad my axolotl that i’ve had for 4 years died today. I moved cities in January and she’s had a progressive health decline since then. The water tests perfect, PH is 7.6, water stays cold. I noticed her getting skinny and eating less so I tried multiple things throughout- new filter, added bubbler, new sand, tank scrub, tubbing, floating food pellets- sinking food pellets - nightcrawlers. Nothing worked. She was always sooo chunky but got skinnier and skinnier until she was bones. She didn’t have any fungus but I’m considering bacterial infection.. Never had rocks in her tank. Was just wondering if anyone had suggestions for what could have happened (something I need to get my tap water tested for etc) Thank you.

honestly you should have sought an exotic vet when you noticed such decline. this could have been a number of things from infection to uninhabitable water via untestable factors or even just severe stress. Without testing the body or getting professional water testing you can never be sure, I think you could take your tap water in somewhere and get it tested for more than the home kits cover but I'm not entirely sure how to go about that. I'm very sorry for your loss and I hope you find some answers!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
