That is exactly what I mean, especially if someone keeps their water on the full side.

I've never heard if that being an issue. It's not like screen is sharp or jagged. Also, although they sometimes do, axolotls rarely jump. Whatever you use it doesnt really matter as long as it provides a lot of ventilation and is secure. I just dont want new keepers thinking an easily found screen lid is dangerous, or thinking that a normal aquarium hood is adequate because it usually isn't.

I haven't found a metal screen lid that states it is stainless steel. If it does than yes it would be safe, but most of the ones I've seen only state its metal and not what kind. I wouldn't risk it unless it specifically states it. A normal aquarium hood is perfectly adequate. Why would you believe it is not?

I would challenge you to find proof that an axolotl has ever been threatened by a screen lid. I doubt you would find any.
A normal hood is adequate IF proper temperatures can be maintained. Many people struggle with this. A screen lid allows more airflow and increased evaporation which is very effective at lowering water temps, especially in conjunction with a fan. This thread has gone way off topic. My appologies to the OP.

I got my first axolotl a few years ago. Few months later I finished highschool and left home on bad terms. The night I went back to get my pets, I found my axie on the floor. He probably wasn't there very long, but of course I assumed he was dead. And I was in a big hurry to get out of that house between all the screaming that night.

Reading this I just realized he was probably still alive. And I feel horrible. Now years later I'm FINALLY getting more axies and I will never leave their tank uncovered again. ):

:O I remember I was cleaning the tank And I gently put my axolotl in a bucket and moved it to the table, it jumped out of the bucket and onto the concrete. 'Cause the door was open. It was like wriggling around and all and I quickly scooped it up. It bleeding under the skin and had skin pealed a bit. But it survived. And still here today, but it ate my other axolotl. Awkward.

Amazing it survived. Yeah, I bet he realized he was a water creature as soon as he ended up out of the tank. Silly dude. But glad he's better.
