decided to throw together a list of some necessary supplies one needs for an axolotl, including links to them on amazon. this isn't meant to be a master list by any means but it does include the main requirements.

sponge filter - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08X4WZSKL/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A347M7GPRV98GY&psc=1
air pump - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009YF4FI/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1
API test kit - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000255NCI/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1
seachem prime - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00025694O/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1
cooling fan - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DXHFI9E/ref=ox_sc_act_title_5?smid=A3JOXQD5CKDA39&psc=1

i'm sure i'll add to this list with other less important things (plants, decor, etc)

The idea sounds good.

Nevertheless, 20 years ago, I choosed, as do a lot of european breeders, not to get any filter.
The nitrogen management is done by fast-growing live plants, and secundarily by some dead oak leaves.
Of course, live plants need light.

So, with this technical choice, the main requirements are :
- a lot of fast-growing live plants (Egeria, Ceratophyllum, Salvinia...)
- a good lighting
- a timer

But I admit someone can make it on a different way.

i've never heard of this- but i have wondered about it.
about how many plants would one need? i imagine you would need quite a bit to maintain things.
do you use grow lights in your tanks? i've always wondered about using them and am considering getting a few.
this is very interesting, i'd like to hear more and possibly see your setup :)

If you have time (excuse me if it's a bit long), you can see my setup on this previous thread :

And I explained the method to set up a filterless aquarium here :

The precise number of plants is difficult to tell but the more you put the best it is (see my setup - the plants have grown since ; I'll have to throw out some)

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
