Hi
what does evey one feed their newly hatched axolotls in the winter daphnia are non existant and brime shrimp are a lot of work.

I found a commercial high protein diet for clawed frog tadpoles but would axie tadpoles be considered suspension feeders? and would they take non living food?

Thanks
Killian

Hi Killian, young axies are not suspension feeders and mine eat frozen bloodworm when live food is scarce . You should be able to get daphnia from aquatics tho,
i can usually get it all year
Good luck

Thanks Andrew,

Whats is a suspension feeder? will very young axies eat bloodworm or is it too big?

Killian

Hi Killian, suspension feeders filter the water to extract tiny particles of food. I once bred Xenopus laevis and found their tadpoles fed in this way, I had to liquidize mushy peas and add this to the water. Within an hour or two the water would be perfectly clear!
Very young axies couldn't manage bloodworm as it can be too big, daphnia is what you need. Have you phoned around all your local aquatics shops? like i say i can usually get it anytime. If not i'd dig about in any local ponds to see if i could find anything small enough! not the best time of year tho for that sort of thing!

Could you recomend an aquatic supplier that would post them to me? I live in Ireland and there are not many suppliers around particularly where I live.

Thanks
Killian

best person to ask would be John Clare, Killian. He also lives in Ireland.

I've got to go to my local aquatics in the next few days to pick up an aquarium i've had built. I'll ask the guy if he's getting a regular supply at the moment, If so i'll see what i can do! If you ring this number 0121 744 4501 they may be able to help you, if not ask them for the number of the aquatics next door to them (it's the biggest one in my area)
Good luck
Andy

Can't see why you think brine shrimp are hard work, Killian (great name btw). I keep mine suspended in my indoor tank so it is surrounded by tank water and at room temp. I also know that it gets penty of light from the timer I use.

Couldn't be easier top up from tank, add salt, eggs and food. Pour out in two days time and feed hatchlings to axie babies. Next day start again.

Be interested in seeing piccys of a suspension feeder if anyone has.

Hi Mik, i don't have any pictures of the xenopus tadpoles but they look pretty strange! Find a website on african clawed toads and you should see pictures of them. There are also a number of fish species that feed in this way.

Thanks guys,

I have just hatched brime shrimp today for the first time, not as much work as I thought actually, took so long to hatch I thought id done something wrong.

I have found a mail order company Blades biological that sell daphnia eggs but think they only sell to schools.

How do you drain the baby shrimp from the mix? they are so small and how do you remove the salt?

How much shrimp would you feed to a new clutch of axies and how often?

Sorry for all the questions but I am new to keeping axolotls (havent even got them yet but am getting a group of tadpoles in a few weeks)My specialty being exotic birds and mammals.

Thanks again
Killian

Hi Killian, i think Mik could answer your questions a bit better than me as i don't tend to use brineshrimp as a rule. I'd drain them using a tea srainer and run some freshwater through . They'll need feeding quite a bit and the sooner you get them a bit bigger they should take frozen bloodworm.

Mik, what do you use to suspend your brine shrimp in??
I'm thinking of doing that with my new batch of eggs when they hatch, to keep them separate but at the right temperature. How do you make sure they don't leak or tip over and contaminate the water?
Do you have an airline going in there too?
