Axolotls under anesthetic

Some of you may have read my previous thread about our little guy :

We are using F10 disinfectant to try and get rid of the parasites and fungus but unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be working and now the only other option is an investigation. This involves anesthetising the axolotl and then looking more closely at the area. It is a costly procedure at £250 and that is just the investigation. If he needs any treatment we are looking at forking out more for surgery or whatever.

Has anyone ever had an axolotl under anesthetic? How risky is it? Are we talking a 50-50 chance of survival? What are our other options - just leave him to suffer in discomfort or get him put down?

What would you do? Would you take the risk of getting the investigation done knowing that he might not wake up? What are the worst case scenarios? 1) he doesn't wake up, 2) they find out what the problem is but they can't treat it or we can't afford to have it treated, 3) they can't find the problem in which case, we still have to pay £250.

I don't think the risk of anesthesia on axolotls is that high. There are a few threads on axolotls and surgery. Bren had to have surgery on Neptune to remove some rocks from her belly. Kuphie also had to have surgery on Shamrock to remove a rock.

Talk to your vet and see if there is some way they can work out a deal. Many vets like working on exotic animals (as opposed to dogs and cats), so they're willing to work with you because it is interesting for them.
