I was having some problems cycling my tank, but I finally got the ammonia level down. Now my axies are settled in their big new home, but I wonder how long I should wait before I put sand in? I've read that sand can cause impaction in smaller axies and so I'd decided to wait until they're big enough to safely pass it before I put any in there. How big should they be before I don't have to worry about this? I haven't measured them yet, but they're probably about 4 inches long. I do put their food in a dish to reduce the possibility of it getting spread all over the tank and becoming hard to clean, so I know that will help.

I dont have axololts but i have 2 Louisiana newts about 5 inches each with sand, pluse 2 c orientals that are on sand. They aren't a year yet and probably not 1 1/2 inches long. I haven't had a problem with sand i use caribsea.

Here is my 2 cents.
When I got my axies they were 4 inches. I still had them in sand and a food dish and they did good.
Also what type of sand are you using?

I haven't bought any sand yet, but I think I was looking at the Imagitarium brand from Petco.

Also as an added note I did find them both in the food dish eating yesterday, so I know for sure they've figured out where the food is. The last couple of days I wasn't sure if they had figured it out because there was so much uneaten food left, but today there was hardly anything.

Super Natural in my opinion is the best sand for mines. Imagitarium sand is too big and could eventually lead to your axolotls to eating it.20170319_120604.jpg

good to know. I always appreciate advice from someone who has actually used it before.

I had mine on sand at 2" to 3" long. But use super fine sand!! (If it says a freshwater stingray can use it, it's fine..) I had black sand at first and it destroyed his toes. I didn't realized it was really abrasive. I switched to a super soft, powder sand and he's great now.
