My smaller axolotl passed on today. We saw this coming for a while, as she had scoliosis develop over the first half year and lived through it for another year and a half. It looks like heart/liver failure (?) was the final cause (swollen jaw, refusing food for the last few days).

Her tankmate (male leucistic) seems ok, but Im wondering if I should do a water change or any treatment just in case.

Why do you think you may need to change the water?

Was it a long time before you found her? If thats the case I say yes, do a water change.

Other than that, I would say you don't need to, except for piece of mind.

I'm sorry to hear of her passing. A water change other than the regular shouldn't be necessary if the problem wasn't contagious.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
