hey

OK...I had 3 axolotls in a 60lt tub. (with large gravle, 2 filters, lots of plants and a pot).
1 female (black), 2 males (gold & grey).
It is pretty cold down here, and not much light during the day...so i thought they would be alright together...Wrong!
I was doing a redecoration of the tank on thursday and to my suprise...I found some eggs! about 100 of them!
Well...i myself have never bred axolotls.
I fished out the eggs (sticky little things arn't they!) and put them in a small glass tank.
Friday morning i checked on them and Presto! there are 115 little baby axolotls. Every one hatched!
I did a bit of searching on the net...only to find NO INFO!
Using the info i did get i did the following...I have a couple of micro worm cultures set up...so got a good swipe of that saturday morning and put it in the tank (3.5cm deep water). Straight away the little things are darting forward and eating!!!
I have cleaned out the tank (syphaning with an air tube!) several times and fed them after. (5 times altogether.

Ok...I hear you saying..."what is she going on about! She seem to be going quite well!"...well acatualy i am HOPING i have done every thing right and am frightened of doing something wrong.

Ok...what do i do now? Any tips, welcome! I would love some sort of calender of what to expect, but anything will be great!

Jessica

P.S. i have a brine shrimp jar set up...hatching brine shrimp as i type! Can u feed the babies these, and if so how?
Also the babies have grown 3mm since they hatched...(he,he,he yes i DID measure them!)

hey

Thanks for the link.

I have a couple of Q's not covered by that.

Do i airate the young?
Can i feed the young frozen mysis shrimp (when they are older)

Thanks
Jessica

1) I do

2) you can, but live (and newly hatched) has more nutritional value. You'll want to make sure you clean up any leftover food immediately so as to avoid fouling the water.

hey

Thanks for that!

The babies are currently eating microworms and newly hatched brine shrimp.

They have grown heaps! When they first hatched they were 8mm long. At the end of the third day (last night) the measure 13mm on average. The biggest are about 2mm longer than the smallest.

They are so cute!

Any ideas on what sizes they should be at say...14 days, 1 month 1/12 months ect?

Thanks again
Jessica

Jessica,

They will grow quickly and will be canabalistic for a while. Best to serpate them out into groups of similar sizes to minimise losses. Give them plenty of room and weeds to hide in/retreat to.

Good luck, jealous as hell waiting for mine to get it on

regards,

Mikki
