Hello, I have just purchased a tiny axolotl baby. I was just wondering when it is safe to add sand. Also it has developed some little dark speckles on its head. It is also not very active. Is this normal for little ones? When will I be able to tell the gender and feed larger foods? Right now I am feeding blood worms and it is eating well. Any other tips or advice would be great.

Aww, congratulations! So cute! You should wait until 5" to put it on sand. Usually they start to show signs of gender around 8"-9". You can try to introduce new foods any time. I like chopped blanched earthworm for little ones around 3", and you can try pellets as well. Mine are less enthusiastic about pellets until they get a bit bigger. The spots on his head are freckles and are normal in a leucistic. They might fade or darken as your baby grows up.

Thank you! She is kind of yellowish but you can only see it in person. For now I am calling it a girl. Her name is ruby. If she turns out to be a boy it will be rubyn lol.
