has anyone any good ideas for backgrounds, i want it to be natural looking rock wall with plants climbing over it, i was thinking of using expanding foam and was wondering can the shape be sanded or adjusted in some way after it has set i dont fancy my chances of getting it spot on first time. any ideas would be very much apreciated

Look at the recent posts in the Photos & Pictures of Enclosures topic. Also, see ideas here:

I have no experience using expanding foam, so hopefully others can chime in on that topic.

hey alex, i just created a thread on this very topic, here http://www.caudata.org/forum/messages/7618/72907.html?1162677758

i will be posting a step by step post on how to build a vivarium soon.

where you live, some of the best vivarists in the world can be found. i bet if you did some good searching, you could find someone not far from you that could be a mentor. good luck and take care!

Cork is supposed to work very well. Plants can grow on it, and it is long lasting. It has been used for years by dart frog people.

I have used cork before, and it starts to get saturated with water and will get moldy over time.

That probably won't be the case with all sorts of cork, but it definatly was the case with the cork that got delivered together with a terrarium of mine a long time ago, and I've heard a friend about the same problem with cork.

i've used cork, and the foam, called "great stuff", and i've found they work well together. the great stuff is great for putting plant holders, driftwood, and cork into. just make sure you put them in within a few minutes of it sprayed.
