Has anybody else witnessed this? Kiro, my large black male axolotl has developed some very strange quirks, one of which is barking! He does this by coming up to the surface and snaps but not gulping air (which he sometimes does as well) instead its like a short intake and expulsion of air that makes quite a significant bark sound. Now he seems to do this when hungry, This could be my imagination but he seems to do it to get attention especially when hungry (neurus used to throw pebbles around her tank when hungry).
Is this normal Axolotl behaviour?

Mine dose kinda the same thing once and a while but sounds more like cheep. Kinda like a baby chicken.

my older female does this barking thing sometimes, especially at night when coming up for air. It sounds pretty loud especially as the tank is in my bedroom

Hi Neurus,

As I'm sure you are aware axies have gills and lungs, they periodically gulp air either because of some latent desire to morph or to aid in flotation.

Sometimes this gulping can produce noises similar to barking. Axies do not have the physical mechanisms for vocalization so it is likely your axie is just gulping air.
