My 7-yr-old has several wild-caught salamanders... spotted, marbled, and spotted slimy. The spotted (Rex) was very personable at first, eagerly attacking earthworms as soon as we fed him. (We caught him ourselves so this was his behavior right out of the wild.) One day we gave him a big mealworm which he attacked then spat out in disgust and since then we haven’t seen him eat anything. That was over 2 weeks ago... but he has had worms available in his terrarium and he’s as plump as ever so I assume he’s finding and eating those worms, right!?... any idea why he got more secretive?
As long as he’s fat, can we assume he’s finding the worms when we aren’t looking?
I’ve seen warnings that salamanders can be prone to obesity... any suggestions there?
We’ve had 2 marbled salamanders for almost a year and their body size has varied a little in that time but has stayed pretty consistent. We rarely see them eat because they’re more secretive but there are more than enough earthworms crawling around their tank because we err on the side of dumping in too many worms. Our experience with them makes me think they self-regulate pretty well. Is feeding salamanders as simple as it seems to be? Thanks!
