So the other day I was at a lake looking for tadpoles like I do every year in the spring. This time though when I dipped my net in I realised I caught a newt. I think he is a smooth or a palmate newt I'm not sure but because I can't post pictures here I will find out on my own. I have a few questions on his care.
1. I am feeding him woodllouce on land and in the water I have three small frog tadpoles, water bugs (not sure which ones), water snails and bloodworms. But I am not sure if he is eating. So is what I'm feeding ok? How to know when he eats the food?
2. I have a small dish (like a clay plate thing that is supposed to be under plant pots) and I've put a small layer of soil and on top of that a small layer of moss. I have planted small plants from the forest. ( small ferns, a flowering plant and grass) is that ok?
3. How deep should the water be?
4. What else should i know about keeping them?

Thanks so much for answering

As far as food goes definitely take out the tadpoles you can transfer diseases between frogs and newts that way. Try finding him some earth worms or if you can Canadian night crawlers chopped up. Red wrigglers he's unlikely to eat if you cut them up because they give off a bad scent. Goodluck!
