I live in Texas, for the last 30 days or so we get 100F nearly everyday or more, that's on average 38 to 40C during the afternoon hours. Of course my house has AC but when the public consumption reaches increases, well sometimes the electricity goes out in an entire neighborhood. Well it happened yesterday afternoon at 4.30pm and the power came back only after midnight. I was glad to have about 15 freez packs in my freezer and went to buy bags of ice..... my critters are all fine.
BUT, if you leave far from any store, please do your newts / salamanders a favor, have a reserve of freez packs in the freezer, they are cheap, unlike your critters, they could be the difference between saving them all or loosing them all. Power outage DO HAPPEN! Be ready!!!

Re: Be ready or loose them all

Very good advice, Francois. About a week ago it finally started getting too hot here so I went and got about a dozen ice packs. A few cities away they had to deal with a power outage for the entire day and the heat index was a record 119 here. I'd hate to have that happen but it's better to be prepared.

Re: Be ready or loose them all

that sounds scary - I'm glad your critters are ok. Those temps are just incomprehensible to me..

many people up here who live off the grid have gas-powered fridges. That might be a good electricity-independent investment down south. Also, I have a small Honda EU2000i inverter generator which I used occasionally before I had power. It could easily power a fridge during an outage.

I think all across the nation there's going to be a massive heat wave. Everyone should prepare. Great awareness post!

I did not know about gas-powered fridges!!! Great info.
So you mean to tell us that you used to live without being connected to the grid and without plumbing in the same time? WOW. You are brave!

they are not too easy to find, but they do exist!
yeah, I lived without power for 4 years. I chose that (living in the boondocks) over an apartment in town. But have power now.

Re: Be ready or loose them all

smaller propane gas-powered fridges are often sold for RVs and motorhomes. But I've seen real big ones too

if you google "propane refridgerators" you get all kinds...

I hate heat waves....i´m like caudates, my range goes from 3 to 22ºC. More than that and i suffer...and given where i live, i suffer A LOT....
So far, we are having an unusually cold summer this year (not complaining, believe me), really strange...

Molch, isn't your record high temperature like 21c? What do you need to worry about heat for? You can just dig a hole in the permafrost!

I read that Texas, so far, has the hottest summer since 1980!!!

Re: Be ready or loose them all

Thankfully I have a nice cool basement for my tiger ^.^ So even when it gets above 30C his tank is still nice and cool. Not to mention I have a nice cool spot to hide away in when it gets hot as well lol.

Re: Be ready or loose them all

The temperature doesn't go above 26C during the hottest summer days here, so I have things fairly easy, and the winters also tend to be mild, so I do well on that end too. The past couple of winters have been unusually cold, with temperatures hovering around the -10C to 0C range for weeks at a time, but even that only resulted in an inch of ice on my pond. The average monthly temperatures are 1C min, 5C max, 3C mean for January and 11C min, 19C max, 15C mean for July.

I'm similar; I feel comfortable sitting around at 17C, I change into shorts at 20C and I get stressed and irritable at 22C if it lasts for more than a few hours.

Re: Be ready or loose them all

Everyone who has animals that are dependent on AC should give some thought to what they'll do when a power outage or AC breakdown occurs. It's not a matter of "if", it's a matter of "when". These failures are most likely to occur during the hottest weather, so quick action may be needed. Good work, Francois.

Thanks Jen, last year I lost the AC, this year is a power outage.... I am learning we can't rely on that stuff!

This is my first full summer in flagstaff, az and after living in phoenix for a few years its like heaven! It rarely gets to ninty here. But since most houses don't have ac, mine included its an interesting struggle.

Thats why I have a cooling system i'm building for my new tank. Currently, i use fans and some water turbulance to keep the temp around 70°f but have ice jugs, packs and a styrofoam cooler all ready incase of a freak heat wave. Although its rained a ton for the last month even hailed! Lol

Well DUHHH you live in Canada, you live in a fridge! ;-) Here it's a oven, sometimes we get 25C in January!

Re: Be ready or loose them all

for us northerners it's the cold - if the power goes out in winter, the place could freeze solid. I have another stove that's an oil-drip but it has to be turned on manually; so when I go away in winter, I have my neighbor check in once a day that the heat is still running
