Beefheart, chicken liver...

Salmonella in chicken? If I buy a container of fresh chicken liver and freeze the livers, won't that kill any bacteria?

Beefheart... same question.

I just realized I never fed the axolotls chicken livers, it all went to my cat, ferrets, parrots and turtles.

But I bought a WHOLE beefheart at the grocery store, whacked it into manageable chunks, and every once in a while I slice off a bit for the 'lotls.

Just color me confused and concerned.

Thawing the chicken is where the salmonella comes from. Any time you that meat, it grows salmonella. When you cook it, the salmonella is killed. Chicken is particularly bad for salmonella, although I don't know why.

Hi Sharon,
I've never fed chicken although I have occasionally fed beef liver but from what I can gather it's not so good for them. How do they like the beef heart??

My guys LOVE the beef heart. When I feed earthworms everyone is content to wait their turn but when the beefheart hits the water, you'd better count your fingers!! ROTFL!

I would avoid chicken in any form.

In the past (1980's) I fed beef/elk/venison heart and liver to the axolotls. Back then it along with worms was a common practice.

Currently however mammal meat has been discouraged as a staple food.

If you feed beef heart my advice would be to slice it paper thin and no longer then a medium night crawler.

My current axolotls have been fed no mammal meat at all.
