I just got my first axolotl a few days ago and he just hangs out in one corner of the tank all day and doesn't move. He'll come out when I feed him and it looks he moves around while I sleep too. I just want to make sure this is he still getting used to the new environment or just normal thing. The first photo is the corner where he always is I've moved that plant a bit out of the way now.

It might just be his way of getting used to transferring homes. What are the water parameters? You do have a cycled tank, yes?

Sometimes adult axolotls, such as yours seems to be, arent always as active as the juveniles are as well.

Axolotls are nocturnal amphibians, so the most likely situation is that he’s just sussing out his new tank out night when he feels most comfortable

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
