I know that there have been many posts about shrinking gills but as a few other things are going on at the same time, I was wondering if anyone can help.

My 8 year old Axie had her first egg lay last month. I followed some advice and moved her and her mate into a new tank and all seemed normal except her appetite slowed for a while. AND THEN she ate and ate and ate. Fair enough, she had just laid a lot of eggs :frog:. This appetite has not really relented but her partner has seemed to almost stop eating. If he sniffs at food she comes over and bullies him a bit and now he often turns away as soon as food comes near him.

As they are school pets I have had to move them again (to my place) for the school holidays. Most of the water and decorations came home with them. Her appetite and behaviour has not changed with the move but a week after the move her gills have shrunk overnight and she is hiding her head between the two hides. She is also running into things a bit and her partner is very skitish. The tank at home is smaller than school and I am sure this does not help. She has always shared a tank with golden snail and they are too big for her to eat and never caused a problem before.

API test kit says all parameters are normal.

In summary - Her gills are shrinking, she is very, very hungry, she laid her first set of eggs 3 weeks ago and she has become aggressive to her tank mate if she wants a spot or food.

I don't know what she did but her gills look dark and fluffy again. She is still hungry but has slowed down and is back to being kind to her tank mate. She has been like this for weeks and now she is back to normal. Must have just been upset by some changes we had to make.

Good to hear she's doing fine!
It could possibly be the egg laying that shifted her mood a bit, then moving her around, and changing her light cycle probably? I've Gills being shorter only when waters are not clean enough, like ammonia a bit out of range or nitrite
But I'm glad to hear she's eating and doing well! Good luck :)
