I want to witness the calls of the frogs or the courtship of our smooth newts in person and im wondering what are the best conditions to go looking.

For newts. I often see them in the water in broad daylight here in NE USA and the terrestrial phase can also be seen in daylight sometimes too. When I lived in a warmer place that was almost never the case, and they could only be found in water by dragging a net through the mud and then searching the mud for them or by using traps. They would also turn up under rocks and debris on land sometimes, event adults.

Yep the best time I find is two hours after dark, using a torch - for both newts and frogs/toads
