Hi Yes the pads are a good indicator also males tend to be much thinner and and have less high tails. The heads are a little different but you have to be a nut like me who enjoys watching them for hours to tell. Out off your box full check out the thinnest. regards KB

None of the care sheets I've seen mention head width, but one of my three similar-size juveniles has a noticeably wider, blockier head. Does this suggest anything about its sex? Or is it just a beefy newt?

Hi this may seem a bit daft but just look at the face from the front then compare the different sexes . To me the female seem a little heavier in the cheeks and a slightly different jaw line. Or it could just be my males. Regards KB

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
