Big fluffy gills!!!!

I've seen some photos on here of axies with big, beautiful fluffy gills!!!! And then I've seen some that look kind of dull and limp. I want to know HOW you've gotten their gills so gorgeous! !! What are you feeding them? Good water quality?!?
