I've had my great crested newt for a little over two years and basically I looked in the tank and he hadn't moved since this morning and was fairly bloated. I thought he was dead and put him on the land section. He didn't move at all. But he was alive so I put him back in the water and suddenly he was acting fine inspite of his apparent bloat. He ate an earth worm and appears to be fine with his movements. He is in a twenty gallon tank half land and half water but he is on gravel so I am afraid he may have swallowed some gravel. Any tips?

Could you possibly add a photo of your newt and its set up so we can see please :)

It's only about two inches of water

Cant help with the bloat but i would remove the pebbles in your aquarium:eek:

I don't know if that gravel is the problem. Triturus species aren't the same as axolotls when it comes to gulping down food items. That doesn't look like an intestinal impaction but like bloat. Check this:

Caudata Culture Articles: Bloat

Your newt needs a lot more water if you ask me. If you want them to have a terrestrial fase during winter I would suggest you transfer it to terrestrial setup, so you can offer it a full aquarium during spring and summer.

The gravel really isn't the problem with Triturus species, so you can leave it in. Species which feed by gulping down their prey, like axolotls and tiger salamander larvae, have problems with gravel.

This looks like typical bloat, so follow the link Jort posted. Good luck mate!

If you took out your gravel because of me sorry:eek:, that was my uneducated guess.:uhoh: thought it be the same for all these crider's.

Dont believe everything you hear:alien::ufo:
