Hi there,
I have owned two axolotls for about 5 years. Over the last couple of months, one of them has started becoming fatter and has eaten less and less. He has now not eaten properly for a couple of weeks and is enormously fat! He has also started floating upside down over the last couple of days.

Today we have put him in the fridge as per instruction on this site. We used to have rock substrate in the tank (but took it out ages ago) and now there's nothing on the bottom. Our other axolotl is fine, and eating normally.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Can you offer your water conditions and pics of your axolotl? How long ago was it that you removed the rocks from your tank exactly? Maybe people here can help more with a little more info from you.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
