Hello!
I am having a bit of a panic moment. When I first got axolotls several years ago, I knew nothing about them. I know that is bad, but I really did not know better and should have done more research. One of my axolotls passed away recently (bacterial infection that’s been taken care of) It was a female kept with a male (they’d been together for several years). They never bred and I never saw spermatophores from my male in the tank. When the female died, I felt so bad about my male being alone that I got him a friend. Unfortunately, it was a baby when I got it. It is 7 months old now and still in a separate tank and I am now worried about breeding and even being able to keep them together, because I’m not sure the gender. It’d never been a problem before, so I didn’t consider it at first until the breeder I got her from mentioned it after I already had it. There’s a small visible bump, but the body is also much more plump on the bottom I feel like (maybe just too much snacking?).
Does this look like a male or female 7 month old?
if it’s female what should I do? I couldn’t bare to trade it or give it away. I’m so attached already. The separate tank I have is only a 10 gallon, so I didn’t want it to be their permanent tank. The larger tank I feel like would be too cramped for mesh, plus I’m not sure how filtration works if there is mesh in the tank.
Is it possible the male is infertile since he has never produced spermaphores even in the presence of a female in 3 years?
