Not sure if this has been posted within this forum but I am looking for people who have successfully bred Peninsula Newts. - I am a newbie with these guys having come from Fire belly newts so not sure if they breed the same or not.. Just looking for people who have bred them in the past and could give me tips and tricks of the trade.

Also dumb question maybe but.. I also have 4 eastern spotted newts in the tank with the peninsulas, and was curious if interbreeding was even a thing, since technically they are both a sub species of eastern newts

thanks

PS - I own 12 Peninsula newts - so there is definitely a chance i have a breeding pair somewhere in there lol

These guys are in a 75 gallon planted tank

Yes inbreeding is possible. Usually a drop in temperature for a few weeks followed by a temperature increase will get them to breed. Same for all 4 subspecies. Check out the North American Newts subforum and you'll see threads about it.

Awesome thank you! They might be weird looking if they interbreed haha

I think letting them knowingly interbreed is irresponsible, but your choice. I would personally advise you not to potentially sell on any hybrid juveniles.
How about separating them and monitoring the differences of the two groups instead, that to me would be far more interesting .

I'm not knowingly trying to breed them. I was just curious if they would try. That's all I asked..

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
