I need help breeding my emperor newts. I have recently moved them from a terrestrial with a water bowl to a 50/50 land to water tank. there is moss, pothos, and some other plants in there as well as some floating plants in the water area. should i cool them down first.also there is aslo a pump and a filter in the water area.

I would give them heavy feedings then a cooling period. I would feed them every other day for 1-2 months before the winter or cooling period. During the cooling period their metabolisms should slow down. I would cool them at 50 degrees and maybe keep the lights dimmer than usual. At this point they should be fed less and they should be less active. At this point they shouldn't be in a fully aquatic setup but in a terrestrial setup. After 2-3 months after cooling them, when the temps rise do a 50/50 setup. Try to provide a slow incline from water to land. Male T. shanjing like to lay spermatophores on the transition of land and water, and the females like to lay their eggs on the transition as well. I wouldn't expect them to lay in the spring time if your cooling and heating your tank according to the temps outside. T. shanjing breed later in the year. Try to make it easy as possible for your newts to breed. Give the easy access to land and water and provide places or objects where females can lay eggs on. Good luck!

Should I be feeding them heavily right about now? Where would be a good place to put a tank at that can reach 50 degrees? How would you seperate the tank to make a 50/50 tank? Thanks
