My axolotl has developed an odd. . thing on its arm. Symptoms:

Appearance:
white nodule with red gash/abscess above it, looked at first glance like a wound to me. White nodule is not fluffy or wispy, its kind of solid.

At first I thought something had ripped a chunk out of his leg, maybe something in the tank, and it was bone sticking out. But I'm not hundred percent sure. Photo attached.

Behaviour:

Unchanged

Appetite:

Unchanged

Water levels:

unchanged, but tank emptied and cleaned to be on the safe side.

Current status:

Friged and miserable.

I'm prepping a salt bath and keeping him friged. the other tankmate was also briefly friged in a separate tub, but has shown no similar symptoms so will be going back into the clean tank tonight. Is this a break, and if it is, how do I help the little blighter fix it?

Poor little guy, unfortunately I'm not exactly sure what's the matter, I read somewhere earlier that its a sign on amputation when that happens, but I am not 100% sure.

Personally I'd think it's best to keep him/her under close moderation for the next few days, try and make sure nothing sharp or harmingful is anywhere near it. If you notice it getting progressively worse or its apetite changing then that's when you should start to worry. The axolotls do have regenerative properties, so even if the full arm did come off then it would eventually grow back. I'm not sure if this causes the axolotl pain or not.

Good luck

If it has a tank mate, it probably is a wound. Tank mate confused the limb with lunch, most likely. :-(

Do not do a salt bath. Salt baths are good for fungus, but very painful in open wounds. Hopefully, if you just continue to keep the water very clean (that was the right idea to change out the water) it will heal.

Good luck!

It wouldn't be the first time with this likely pair. . . .

Thanks guys. I'm going to thaw the poor blighter today and reintroduce him to the tank this evening. Hopefully a few days in clean water has helped the process speed along.
