Building an aquaterrarium

Hello! I've been building an aquaterrarium for my two c. orientalis. I've made my own backround and I've painted it. Now I've heard diffierent things about the laquer. Some people say it's not neccesary to use, some people say you have to use a special kind.. Does anyone here know?
Would really be great if someone could answer
