"California newts", Taricha torosa, have yellow under their eye, while "oregon newts", Taricha granulosa, have brown under their eye. Location is another key.
"California" is the correct common name for Taricha torosa. "Rough-skinned" is the correct common name for Taricha granulosa. Pet stores are clueless and commonly use the invented name "oregon" and misuse the name "california". Taricha granulosa are more common in the pet trade, so if it is from a pet shop it is more likely a granulosa. See: http://www.caudata.org/cc/species/Taricha/T_granulosa.shtml
