Also, can Axolotls jump? While doing a water change, I stepped on the hood and broke it. Now I have an aquarium that is completely uncovered, and the water quite high. Can they jump, and if so, how high? How much room from the top of the water to the top of aquarium should there be to ensure they don't get out?

Hello

There's been a couple threads recently of axolotls jumping out of tanks. If you do a search I'm sure you can find them. So short answer would be yes they can. I'd put something on there as a temporary solution until you get the canopy situation resolved. For my fish tanks I just cut out some plastic and taped it to the open areas. I haven't experienced an axolotl jumping out, personally, but I wouldn't risk it. I had a fish that jumped out once and although I caught it right away and he seemed fine, he died the next day. I'm guessing he suffered from internal injuries from the fall.

My tank has about a quarter of space at the top with no water and although it's covered I haven't seen any of them come close to jumping out but you never know.

If you can lower the water level, you'd need it to be about 4 inches down to be safe. If that's not possible, then rig up something, such as aluminum foil taped down in several places.

They can jump!
I don't have a cover thingy and mine never jumped out. My water level is like.... 6 inches below the top of the tank.
