Hi, I read in agerman forum that female axis won't lay their eggs in the absence of a male - and that the eggs will instead go mouldy inside them and cause them to explode or die. Is this true because it sounds ridiculous - if it is true it may explain my ill inflating and mpuldy looking pet though. Can anyone confirm this. Also is there anything that would trick a female into thinking that an axolotl had deposited sperm to make her lay if this is true.

They MAY cause illness, but rarely. Most eggs develop, and if are not fertilized, will be reabsorbed. Female axolotls also may lay infertile eggs, but I think this is pretty rare.

Retained eggs inside of an amphibian do not go moldy. If the eggs are not reabsorbed and are retained (which can also be for years) then the eggs may form adhesions to the tissues surrounding them or if there are other problems the female can get an infection from the pieces of yolk in the abdomenial cavity which is basically the same as egg yolk peritonitis in reptiles and birds. I jhave worked with amphibians that have retained eggs for more than seven years with no ill effects.
