I have a Fbn. I just got some snails today for my fish aquariums. I have 2 trapdoor snails that are golf ball size. Could they be housed with my newt? Thank you!

snails are not a good to have with your newts for many reasons

Trapdoor snails have Opercula (the 'trap door') that they can close like a manhole cover and any and all appendages of your newt could get stuck and damaged, resulting in stress at best, and infection and death in worst case.

Melanoides-species and ramshornsnails are good to have in the tank. An aquarium can't without snails.

I had posted about a snail problem I was having lately, as some members told me to get rid of them as they are a danger to my newts.... I was advised by many many more members in here that pond snails etc are beneficial to the tank and the newts tend to leave them alone.

Not too sure about the type of snail you are talking about though. Im pretty sure someone will give you some sound advice though.

by the sounds of it these probably would be more hazardous than helpful with your newts so i'd be safe and leave them out

I have heard this before, though I have no experience on the matter. Probably best to side on caution, just in case curiosity can kill the newt as well.

Thanks a lot everyone! I guess I will just keep them out then.

I put a few trapdoor snails in with my Alpine newts recently. Within 3 days they had cleaned up all the algae that was making it hard to see the newts through the glass. Now I have to supplement-feed the snails because they've eaten all the algae, but they are all living together peacefully.

In my opinion, a good algae-eating snail to coexist with caudates is the Nerites sp. This is a marine type of snail that is very adaptable to fresh water. They will lay lots of eggs but they won't hatch because they need salt water to do so.

Yeah, it's a shame the nerites won't breed in fresh water ... that's the only thing that has kept me from adding them to the menagerie so far. I've been very happy with the Japanese trapdoors as co-habitants for my newts, though. They've even had a couple of babies in the newt tank by now! Also they can tolerate cold temperatures which the newts need over winter to bring them into breeding condition, which the large apple snails cannot stand (though these I have put in with African clawed frogs ... the only detriment there being, large apple snails make a *lot* of mess, and you have to change water more often ... otherwise I love them all....)
