Can illness spread?

If there is a sick animal in a tank, and removed, but the water remains in the tank, will the illness such as fungus remain in the water even though the water is cycled through a filter and medications are placed into the water? Should the water be completly replaced before adding new animals? Where can you get salk baths and how do you go about preparing them? Do they work for animals sickened with fungus?
