Hi so I have a newt (people on here have said he's likely a western newt) and he is the sweetest thing. I was wondering though, can newts recognize who you are? Everytime he sees me he does a little wiggle against the glass and its very distinctive and when he sees my mom he does a different kind of wiggle. I don't know if this makes any sense. Also, he's stopped doing it since I've been busy lately and I'm worried that I'm not giving him enough attention. He also hasn't shed his skin yet and I've had him for a year, is that normal?

Hi,
Amphibians have a good sight, although not as good as human sight. They are also sensitive to movements. Young larvae can learn rather soon not to be threatened by the shade of the person who brings food. That being said, I couldn't say if they really can distinguish a human from another...

As for the shed skin, newts usually shed in one piece ; they shed head first and, ultimately, they help themselves with their mouth. After the shed is complete, they often eat the old skin.
