I do not have salamanders i have newts, but could be close similarities. My water temp doesn't fluctuate much maybe 3 degrees all year. There diet has not changed much but they breed like crazy laying eggs as i type. I THINK its how much sunlight their is in a day that tells her when its time to lay eggs. He seems to always be ready to breed. Pluse the condition might have to mimic their natural habitat during there mating season like temp, humidity, food extra. Good luck

They will need water in their set up to lay eggs. I dont have salamanders but getting some this week. I have been reading up on them. Someone on here could suggest something to you. I think it depends on their age too.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
