CFBN filtration?

What kind of filtration is recommended for my FB newt's thirty gallon? I am currently housing just one, but sometime in the future I do want to get him a couple more companions. I was thinking of getting a small canister, but is this overkill?

You could use a small air pump driven spounge filter...wouldn't give much current to the water and would help localize most waste in the sponge as well as a place for the bacteria you want to have to break things down to colonize in it. That's what I use.
