i just received a chia pet for Christmas and i have an idea. i wanted to try to use the chia plants in my salamanders vivarium! does anyone think this would be a problem? has anyone tried it before? i wonder what a full grown chia plant might grow into.

I don't think it would cause any problem for the salamanders. I think the salamanders would likely trample it, but it wouldn't hurt to try. Chia is Salvia hispanica. A simple google search will give you lots of information. It actually has a fascinating history.

thanks! i actually only have one small spotted salamander, plus depending on how it grows, apparently chia plants can grow to 1 meter in height!

no, chia won't work because it's a desert plant, so either the chia plant or the salamander would suffer and i think you would rather the chia suffer than the salamander

Chia would probably do poorly in the lighting and humidity of a vivarium, and it's fairly short lived anyway. For a similar effect you could try to source some Lillaeopsis (hair grass), which handles low light and can grow submersed or emersed.
