So my water looks kinda claudy (not crystal clear) why is it? Is it normal for axie tanks to have claudy water? I have ph 7 Ammonia 0 nitrite 0 and nitrate 1 ish my temperature is at 19 Celsius and I do have live plants in the tank, could that be why it looks claudy? Substrate is fine sand and I have a filter at low, any help is appreciate :)

Sorry if his isn't the right place for this type of question!

Re: Claudy Water :$

I experienced a similar issue recently, 2 days after a water change and I was barely able to see through the water. I'm nearly certain that mine was caused by leftover food in the tank. I had a few salmon pellets left that were not eaten and think that may have been the issue. Although it could be a faulty filter as well.

Ok, I feed chopped earthworms on a plate and I use a turkey bayster to clean up unbeaten food, I did do a water change just yesterday, also if it was good wouldn't my ammonia levels rise?

It May just be the fine sand after being stirred up. This happens to my tank sometimes after i do water changes. Unless it's stressing the axolotl out I wouldn't worry. It will likely go away in a day or two.

It's the sand dear. It will go away in a couple of days.

Thank you so much :D this guys are my first axies and I just wanted to make sure everything was ok :) they didn't seemed stressed (both their gills aren't pointing foreword and they don't have curled tails)

Re: Claudy Water :$

It could also be a bacterial bloom, this can happen with a newish setup (people say about a month in is usually when a bacterial bloom happens but it could happen any time), if it bothers you you could probably do a water change and see if that helps. If the sand is new, or wasn't rinsed thoroughly before you put it in the tank, or if the sand was just disturbed, then the sand should settle in a couple days as tammyaxie said but if it bothers you you could do a water change and see if it helps.

Re: Claudy Water :$

I had the same problem even though the water parameters were spot on. The filter was clogged with gunk so I cleaned it thoroughly... My filter is submersible with the spreader bar sticking out the front. It pumps 400ltr's per hour. I can't adjust the speed so to solve the strong water flow problem, I took the bung out of the end of the spreader bar and fitted a elbow pointing straight up... By the end of the day my water was crystal..

Re: Claudy Water :$

I have to agree. I have that exact same sand. And if you really don't rince it well enough, you get cloudy water.. I rinced my sand for about an hour and probably lost about an 1/8th of the sand. Now in the same very tank where I have that white sand, I currently have one heck of a bacterial bloom. However, this tank is only 1 month old and at the very tail end of cycling.

When this happens with my fish tanks. I do a 25% water change everyday until it clears up. If it doesn't bother you that much, you can leave it and it will clear itself up in a week or so.
Good luck!

Ok, so woke up this morning and it's still claudy, I did do a water change yesterday. From what you guys have told me I think it could be a bacterial boom (maybe) my set up isn't too new but I hadn't had one, also could it affected that I just added new decore just recently? (The tree looking thing from petsmart). Now the only other thing I think it might be is my filter could possible be clogged...? I use a hang on back and it had the little suction tub, I have never attempted to clean this suction tube or its inside.. (Sorry if I was suppose to, I ddint know Dx). Bacterial boom and maybe a clogged filter is what I think it might be, I did rinse my sand, not for an hour just till I could stir and my water would be clear, so I don't think it is the sand... Sorry for the long text, any more help on this would be appreciated!!! Thanks to everyone who's trying to help, pleas if you need any more info on my tank feel free to ask, and (sorry) last question, with my watter being claudy and dirty looking should I take my axies out???

the axies probably won't be bothered by the cloudy water so no need to stress them out even more by removing them from their home, I would suggest perhaps another water change, if you're concerned, to try and clear it up a little, could you tell us more about the filter? personally I use an aquaclear 30 on my 20 gallon long and since all the media (sponges and ceramic rings) are in a little basket I just rinse them out with dirty tank water once a month and scrub the rest of the filter (don't use soap though! just a new clean sponge) because I occasionally have a little algae problem but it probably doesn't even need to be cleaned that much, whenever you clean the media you are going to kill some of the bacteria so it's best not to clean the media too often. However the actual filter can get dirty and clogged so it's probably best to keep that clean. If any of that was confusing I'm sure me or someone else could help you out with any more questions :)

Also the decor probably isn't the cause for the cloudy water but keep an eye on it for any paint chipping or strange smells as that could indicate it isn't really aquarium safe (yes even specifically aquarium decor can be unsafe unfortunately as I think we've all had that happen at least once).

The more you stir it and mess with it is the longer it'll take to clear. I'd check the parameters and let it clear on its own in a few days.

Alright thanks guys, I'll let leave my tank alone this week and just keep a close eye on it, if anything happens I'll let you guys know, I'll make sure to update on Friday :)

its probably not bacteria or unsettled sand. low temperature, low light, sand substrate, and no co2 diffuser is a recipe for dead plant disaster. if you got your plants from a pet store you should have quarantined them before adding to your tank. check if your plants are dying. that made my tank revisably cloudy. my

I didn't think about that thank you, I did buy them from pet smart but as of today they had no signs of death, they look healthy green, is there any particullar way of knowing if they're dead?

Hey guys, again thank you all for the help, so Monday I had noticed water was still the same and I was recoommend some carbon stuff for my filter, my water is much clear now and I'm certain it wasn't caused by substrate, I am pretty sure it might have been some sort of bacteria bloom or maybe the plants, but everything is ok all my parameters are fine and the aches are healthy as well :)
