What experience do caudata.org users have with commercially available substrates similar to 'Bed-a-Beast' and whatnot? Which blends/brands do users prefer with primarily terrestrial caudates?

well i use bed a beast but i herd that coco fiber is one of the best

Bed-a-beast is coco fiber.

I prefer to mix about 2 parts top soil to 1 part coco fiber. It holds its shape well, and retains moisture better than either one alone.

I buy coco fiber from Drs. Foster & Smith because they have the cheapest price (about $5 for a 3-brick pack of Eco-Earth). Like Kaysie, I usually mix it with top soil.

Is topsoil just soil outta your backyard?

I know many people do use top soil out of their yard. As long as there are no chemicals being used nearby it should be fine. (If you live next-door to someone with a manicured lawn, it's probably not a good idea to use it.) The soil in my area is scarce and rocky, so I buy organic top soil from a home improvement store (Lowes).
