Hi all, just a quick question. With Chinese fire bellied newts do you count the age of them once they have metamorphosed or do you start counting their age once larvae?

Do many of you raise yours aquatic?

Regards

Matthew

I would count from the year they are born as eggs. You would write it down as CB 2014 for newts bred and raised this year.
I raised Japanese fire bellies last year in a semi aquatic set up and this year I'm raising them terrestrially with damp paper towel substrate and a ball of moss to hide in. I can't say if there's much difference either way at the moment, but the ones kept in the semi aquatic tank were fully aquatic out of choice by the time they were about eight or nine months old.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
